The Lewis Farmhouse,
Block Island, RI, is a great place for a birding vacation! Why? The
American Bird Conservancy has named Block Island a globally important
bird area and The Nature Conservancy (TNC) named it one of 12 Last
Great Places in the Western Hemisphere. It is a critical stopover
on the Atlantic Flyway for thousands of migratory shorebirds,
waterfowl, raptors, and songbirds that find sanctuary here each spring
and fall. The Block Island Bird Banding Station has contributed
to the national USGS Bird Banding Laboratory since 1967. In a
typical migration season over 250 species are banded and reported. Block
Island exemplifies an exceptional partnership in public/private
conservation activity. With strong local leadership and
assistance from many conservation groups, preserved land has grown from
2% to 43% since the 1970’s. The Lewis Family has been in the
forefront of these efforts. The Farmhouse sits amidst 400
conserved acres. Most of Lewis Farm is now a wildlife preserve
owned by the Audubon Society of Rhode Island and TNC. Block
Island is a popular summer tourist destination known for excellent
bicycling, hiking, sailing, fishing, and beaches. Twenty-eight
miles of nature trails are maintained by TNC and the Block Island
Conservancy.Contact: Kay Lewis, 401-466-2113 or lewisdeepwater2@aol.com

migratory bird species passing through. Block Island's coastline
habitat is home to many species including shore birds, wading birds
and songbirds. Songbirds flock to the island, providing beauty as
well as filling the air with their lovely songs. The
Block Island National Wildlife Refuge is an excellent place to
spot an abundance of birds. At Rodman's Hollow, on the southeast side
of the island, you may spot a northern harrier, a threatened species
that feeds and nests here. This preserve is sponsored by a
partnership between the Nature Conservancy, the Block Island
Conservancy, the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management
